A teenager from the Bronx is believed to have committed suicide after allegedly being caught cheating on a test.

Seventeen-year-old Omotayo Adeoye (pictured) attended the prestigious high school Harlem High School for Math, Science and Engineering.  On Thursday, while taking a German exam, Adeoye’s teacher caught her peeking at her phone.  The teacher took the phone from Adeoye and began to scold her.

A classmate recalled that the language teacher then began yelling “Oh, you shouldn’t be cheating! You guys shouldn’t be cheating! You guys are lying to yourselves!”

Adeoye then began to cry and repeatedly apologized, but the instructor responded, “Oh, you are not really sorry.  That’s not a sincere apology!”

At around 2:45PM, Adeoye wrote a note on her test that read “I just want to go away forever on the bottom of the river,” the New York Post reported.  She then asked to use the restroom and never returned.

Adeoye walked from her school to the Hudson River.  According to ABC7, fishermen fishing along the shoreline spotted Adeoye place her belongings down and jump in the river.  The men called for the teen to come back to shore, but to no avail.  The men watched as her body sank underwater.

The police received a call about Adeoye at about 4:20PM.  Divers searched for the teenager’s body, but have so far come up with nothing.

Adeoye, who was described as “brilliant” by those who knew her, is believed to have killed herself due to the pressure she felt to excel in school.

“We are conducting an investigation into this tragic accident, and we are taking immediate action,” said Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña.  “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and her school community.  This must be a call to action.”

Our condolences go out to Omotayo’s family and friends.

  3. After living in Georgia for 9 Years and witnessing the effects of the cheating scandal in Atlanta as well as counties in Georgia that were cheating undercover and never got caught, we wonder why our educational system is so messed up. When you hear kindergardners and first graders in fear of failing their test and watching parents put so much pressure on them to get A’s., not realizing that they are being taught how to remember data with no true learning taking place in many school systems.

  4. I agree wholeheartedly, Leta! It’s like that in Virginia, too.

The school put so much pressure on the kids to pass these standardized testing that they do not retain information, the program is geared toward test taking only which make children robotic pawns now, school is not fun like it used to be, and the kids are not learning the basics. I see more people are turning towards homeschooling which is great if you can do that.

  5. Tragic; I can’t say it enough that we must change the way we educated. If marriages can change to two men, our educational system can change from failure being apart of the evaluation process. RIP

I am 76, PhD in Spanish, an expert in modern language teaching, with 20 years experience working with youth in high schools, colleges and universities. I helped to develop a superior language teaching method which helps all students learn more easily, faster and more completely. Failure (D or F grade) should never be an option for any student. Teachers are unaware of the fact that their current textbooks are based on a teaching method which is as outmoded as the Model-T Ford, inherently confusing, poorly organized, and hamper or even completely block the learning process for many students. I am willing to come to any city in the US or Canada to help teachers and students achieve a level of success in learning a second language which they currently cannot even imagine. I help teachers to understand the principles of effective language teaching and how to reorganize their current teaching materials. My main focus is on teaching Spanish, but I will cover elements of French and German as well. I charge no fee, but would appreciate help with travel and housing expenses. I am available through June 24 and after July 15.

  7. Everyone cheats. When I was in school, I cheated to by writing stuff in the palm of my hands. The teacher caused this devastation. I remember if we got caught by the teacher, he would take the paper away and give us a zero. Some parent put too much pressure on their children to succeed. Not all children are school material. The teacher should be ashamed of herself for carrying on in such a manner considersing how much pressure the world is under today. May her soul rest in peace. At the end of the day all these test that the students are so pressurized to take don’t guarantee a job in the workforce. Teachers be more considerate. I know that teacher also cheated on a test one in her life.

  9. Good riddance. Cheaters make my blood boil; they steal oppertunites from those that actually deserve them.
