Mom says her 1-year old got herpes from daycare worker14
When you send your child to daycare, you don’t expect the baby to come home with herpes. A mother is saying that this is just what happened to her child when she sent her to a daycare in Oklahoma City. The one-year old child was taken to the daycare by her mother, Consuela Smith, who says that her daughter is now in pain day and night.
“She started getting blisters all around her mouth and bleeding.”
When she took her child to the doctor, this mother got the surprise of her life.
“They told me that she had herpes,” she said.
She then reached out to the daycare to find out what happened to her child. The daycare checked one of their workers and confirmed that she had the virus.
“I told her what she had and they told me the worker does have this.”
“Herpetic stomatitis is basically when you have multiple cold sores in your mouth,” medical doctor Ryan Brown told KFOR.com. “Cold sores are normally caused by herpes simplex one virus. They are very easily spread, by touching and rubbing something else or saliva.”
ChildTime corporate offices issued this statement in response to the incident:
Our children’s well-being is of the utmost importance to us. We have strict policies and procedures to ensure we meet or exceed regulatory guidelines on health and safety. We take every precaution to prevent the spread of germs or illness, and investigate any reported concerns.
Despite the company’s assurances, the child’s mother still isn’t happy.
“It’s nasty. A one year old walking around with Herpes.”
According to The American Social Health Association, more Americans have genital herpes than all the other STDs combined. A total of 50 million Americans have the virus inside their bodies, and most people don’t know that they have it.
North Carolina professor of medicine Peter Leone said this on NPR about genital herpes infections in the United States and the high rates of unmarried people with the disease:
DR. LEONE: So if you look at some population-based data in the United States and look at unmarried adults, meaning folks between the ages of 45 and 50, for women, we know the prevalence rate for genital herpes due to HSV-2 is between 50 and 70 percent. So we’re looking at close to the majority or the majority of folks in that age group who are single having genital herpes. So…
FLATOW: Let me go over that number again because you’re saying that – it’s hard to believe – you’re saying that for women between the age of 40 and 50…
Dr. LEONE: Right.
FLATOW: … unmarried women?
Dr. LEONE: Yes, unmarried women.
FLATOW: You’re saying that between 50 and 75 percent of them have herpes type 2?
Dr. LEONE: That’s exactly right. Yeah.
Dr. LEONE: I know. It causes me to pause. I read the article about five times myself, saying, wow, and I do this for a living.
According for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 80% of all herpes infections are undiagnosed. Even more interesting, the disease can be transferred orally and otherwise, even when the person isn’t showing symptoms. It’s a jungle out there, be careful.
