Mom says her 1-year old got herpes from daycare worker

When you send your child to daycare, you don’t expect the baby to come home with herpes.  A mother is saying that this is just what happened to her child when she sent her to a daycare in Oklahoma City.  The one-year old child was taken to the daycare by her mother, Consuela Smith, who says that her daughter is now in pain day and night.

“She started getting blisters all around her mouth and bleeding.”

When she took her child to the doctor, this mother got the surprise of her life.

“They told me that she had herpes,” she said.

She then reached out to the daycare to find out what happened to her child.  The daycare checked one of their workers and confirmed that she had the virus.

“I told her what she had and they told me the worker does have this.”

“Herpetic stomatitis is basically when you have multiple cold sores in your mouth,” medical doctor Ryan Brown told “Cold sores are normally caused by herpes simplex one virus. They are very easily spread, by touching and rubbing something else or saliva.”

ChildTime corporate offices issued this statement in response to the incident:

Our children’s well-being is of the utmost importance to us.  We have strict policies and procedures to ensure we meet or exceed regulatory guidelines on health and safety. We take every precaution to prevent the spread of germs or illness, and investigate any reported concerns.

Despite the company’s assurances, the child’s mother still isn’t happy.

“It’s nasty.  A one year old walking around with Herpes.”

According to The American Social Health Association, more Americans have genital herpes than all the other STDs combined.  A total of 50 million Americans have the virus inside their bodies, and most people don’t know that they have it.

Here’s more:

North Carolina professor of medicine Peter Leone said this on NPR about genital herpes infections in the United States and the high rates of unmarried people with the disease:

DR. LEONE: So if you look at some population-based data in the United States and look at unmarried adults, meaning folks between the ages of 45 and 50, for women, we know the prevalence rate for genital herpes due to HSV-2 is between 50 and 70 percent. So we’re looking at close to the majority or the majority of folks in that age group who are single having genital herpes. So…

FLATOW: Let me go over that number again because you’re saying that – it’s hard to believe – you’re saying that for women between the age of 40 and 50…

Dr. LEONE: Right.

FLATOW: … unmarried women?

Dr. LEONE: Yes, unmarried women.

FLATOW: You’re saying that between 50 and 75 percent of them have herpes type 2?

Dr. LEONE: That’s exactly right. Yeah.

Dr. LEONE: I know. It causes me to pause. I read the article about five times myself, saying, wow, and I do this for a living.

According for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 80% of all herpes infections are undiagnosed.  Even more interesting, the disease can be transferred orally and otherwise, even when the person isn’t showing symptoms.  It’s a jungle out there, be careful.

A person who knowingly has herpes, should never work in places where children are. This is ridiculous! I’m glad it wasn’t an abusive situation.

  2. People who work with children should be required to pass a medical exam. That’s so horrible for that baby being infected with herpes.

  3. Very tragic that this child had to go through this, and now has a virus that will never disappear. I think the worker should DEFINITELY be fired, because assuming that she knew she was infected, she should have followed proper protocol to protect the children she was caring for. The stats about herpes are scary, but why doesn’t it mention that MEN have herpes as well? I hate that it makes it seem like only women have this disease.

    • The Who's Who on

Becuz MEN aren’t the primarily carrier in general of herpes, women are..y’all act like the only way a women can get infected with a STD is thru a man. women, y’all need to think about the higher % of women who are bisexuals and lesbians than compared to men who are bisexual and homosexual..

  4. The Who's Who on

I thought to be hired in a daycare you have to provide a health certificate stating that you’re in excellent health, and also if you become sick with a disease that can be spread to children- tell the employer when you’re sick and if the employer STILL knew that the worker had the virus? The worker and employer need to be sued by the parent. Got nasty perverted folks working around children.. SHAMEFUL. This poor child has to suffer with this type of thing.

It’s really sad that something like this could happen in our society. I pray for the little girl and her family. And i also pray for the women in question, because there is a good chance that she didn’t even know she had it. What really makes me sad is the level of ignorance amongst our people and how quick we are to cast a stone. Again it is tragic that this happen, but we are to be angry with anyone, it should be our broke down and corrupt medical society which does very little in the way of screening for diseases like Herpes and other viruses/ Why because it cost money. They would prefer for millions of people to be running around with these disease rather then do mandatory testing. Also there are treatments and potential cures for many of these viruses that you will never know about because the pharmaceutical companies make billions selling people valtrex and many other un proving and unsuccessful medications. At the end of the day people need to become better informed and do your research before having an opinion about things. I’m sure that ,most people don’t even know that 1 in 6 men and 1 in 4 women have some form of the herpes virus, and that about 70% of our entire population is infected with it and more then half don’t even know it.. Wake up people….

  5. People, please read the article more closely before making asinine comments. This woman did inform the day care center that she was infected with the disease. But they allowed her to continue to work. So if anyone is responsible for this child getting infected with this disease, it would be the agency that employed her. Also, if this Dr. Leone statement is correct, there is a good chance that some of the commenters here, are walking around here with this disease also, and just don’t know it. When was the last time that any of you ask your doctor to check for this disease when you visited their office?

  6. Did you know that if your child has a contagious disease i.e. herpes, MRSA, HIV, teachers and staff are not privy to that information? There’s something wrong with that!!

  7. The baby has cold sores. Cold sores are normally caused by herpes simplex one virus. “They are very easily spread, by touching and rubbing something else or saliva.” That means if the daycare employee had an outbreak she should have deferred contact with the children until the outbreak has subsided. NOWHERE is it documented that the worker or the child was diagnosed with Herpes Type 2 a.k.a. Genital Herpes. Although the incidence of Genital Herpes is as high is 40%, everyone of you who described this worker as nasty may very well have Herpes Simplex yourselves. It is just dormant. There is NO routine testing for Herpes Simplex one. And Herpes Simplex One cannot be converted to Genital Herpes, although you can have Herpes Simplex One if the virus is transmitted to the genital area such as during oral contact with the genital area. That mother may very well have transmitted the Herpes to her child. People it’s the same as a fever blister, the child is having a particularly violent reaction due to a weak immune system or the course of the infection is compounded by the child’s poor oral hygiene. I dare each of you to ask your doctors to check if you have antibodies to the Herpes Simplex One, if you don’t, you must have spent the last few years in a bubble.

As for the writer, they should have spent some time researching the difference between the different strains of Herpes. Please note Dr leone said the prevalence rate for genital Herpes due to HSV-2 is 50 – 70%. HSV-2 is the type that is usually sexually transmitted & carries the greater morbidity and stigma. Where did the writer confirm that the baby has HSV-2. Spreading misinformation just to sensationalize the story but still leaving readers ignorant of the facts.

    • Karina you are the only one on this thread that has sense plus it shows your educated. Thanks for your comment, hope this author reads it!

Thank you very much for saying this. I was thinking the same thing while reading this. This is how people come to the wrong conclusion about a lot of stuff. A lot of people have cold sores and not genital herpes. I dated a chick who would have cold sores but her STD test was negative. I know because I take them and require the person I date to take one.

  8. This whole article sucks, first off how do they even know the daycare worker truly spread the Herpes to the child. Was she kissing the child in the mouth? How was it spread? Most likely that child got it from relatives who kissed her when she was a baby and just now having an outbreak. It’s sad that people are not educated and just jump to conclusions.
