When Cincinnati Bengal quarterback AJ McCarron married his fiancée, former Miss Albama, Katherine Webb on July 12th, many were looking forward to the first pictures that would be released to the public by the couple.
When eventually they were released last Tuesday those that saw them were quite amazed to see that one of the first pictures was not of the new man and wife, but that of man and another lady – a little princess to be exact.
The little princess is Starla Chapman and she is 5 years old. She was the flower girl at the couple’s wedding and it has been said that she and McCarron share a special bond.
The way they met and their unique relationship is an amazing story in itself.
Starla and AJ met for the first time in 2011 when the little girl was first diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia – a rare type of childhood cancer.
In an interview in 2012, the child’s mother Dee Dee Bonner said, “They met and just had a connection we just can’t explain. He loves her to death and she loves him.”
The bonding that happened at first sight grew much stronger when in January 2012 Starla went into a cardiac arrest that was caused by her chemotherapy treatment.
“Starla is our little miracle not only because of the leukemia diagnosis but also because of overcoming the heart condition that should have taken her life,” Starla’s Dee Dee wrote in the caption of the photo that was first posted on AL.com.
Starla has since beat cancer and is in remission. She can now look forward to starting kindergarten soon.
One the wedding day Starla was dressed in a white “Cinderella-style” dress that befitted the royal way she was treated at the McCarron’s wedding in Orange Beach.
“The entire McCarron and Webb family treated us just like family,” Dee Dee said. “It was just an amazing experience.”
